- As the record you have just made in memory of MARCEL DUPRE for the 10th anniversary of his death is just coming out, may we ask you a question: What does a man like MARCEL DUPRE mean today in the world of organ music ?
J. GUILLOU – We keep as a sort of symbol the image of what he was in his lifetime: that of first class artist. To our eyes he undoubtedly stands as a precursor, a pioneer. He has the one who gave the organist’s trade a world-wide ascendancy. Marcel Dupré came at a time when great organists were not considered as concert performers. His masters such as WIDOR or GUILMANT usually performed only their own organs in church. MARCEL DUPRE abolished those frontiers and gave the organist the status enjoyed by the violonists and pianists.
